Lawyers protest against governor’s rule, emergency in KP

A large number of lawyers affiliated with the Insaf Lawyers Forum staged a protest outside the Peshawar High Court on Tuesday against the possible imposition of governor’s rule and emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The protesters carried banners and placards inscribed with slogans against the proposed measures and chanted slogans against what they described as unconstitutional actions by the government.
Addressing the demonstration, lawyers’ leaders said the supremacy of the Constitution and the rule of law were non-negotiable, warning that weakening democratic institutions and misusing discretionary powers could push the country into a deeper political crisis.
They urged the government to refrain from taking steps that, in their view, could undermine constitutional and democratic principles.
The lawyers warned that if their concerns were not addressed, the legal fraternity would be compelled to launch a nationwide protest movement.
They demanded the withdrawal of any move to impose emergency or governor’s rule in the province and called for the restoration of the provincial government.
