KP panel reviews transfer of anti-extremism centre

A meeting of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Cabinet’s Legislative Committee on Monday reviewed a proposal to transfer the Centre of Excellence for Countering Violent Extremism from the Higher Education Department to the Home and Tribal Affairs Department.
Law, Human Rights and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Aftab Alam chaired the meeting held in Peshawar. The meeting was attended by the Law Department secretary and officials from the Home and Tribal Affairs Department, representatives of the Advocate General’s Office and other relevant departments.
The committee reviewed the centre’s current status, administrative structure and the legal and operational implications of the proposed transfer.
Officials briefed the meeting that the transfer could improve inter-departmental coordination and strengthen the province’s efforts to counter violent extremism. The committee also discussed measures to ensure that the centre remains fully functional, its administrative structure is clearly defined and the responsibilities of the departments concerned are streamlined to avoid duplication.
Speaking at the meeting, Minister Aftab Alam stressed the need for a strong and integrated institutional strategy to counter violent extremism. He directed the relevant authorities to examine all legal and administrative aspects of the proposed transfer and submit clear and workable recommendations.
The committee agreed that the proposed transfer would require thorough legal vetting and close coordination among the departments concerned to ensure continuity of the centre’s operations and enhance its role in preventing and countering extremist narratives in the province.
