CM reviews proposed 31km southern Outer Ring Road

A high-level meeting on Tuesday reviewed the proposed construction of a second Outer Ring Road for the southern parts of Peshawar, with an estimated cost of Rs50–60 billion and a tentative completion timeline of three years.
The meeting was held at the Chief Minister’s House and was chaired by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi, according to an official statement.
Senior officials from the relevant departments briefed participants on key aspects of the project, including its tentative alignment, estimated cost and implementation schedule.
According to the briefing, the proposed road will span around 31 kilometres and will cover important southern localities of the provincial capital.
Officials said the project was intended to ease increasing traffic congestion in the city and support economic and commercial activity in surrounding areas.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said the project would play a significant role in addressing the city’s growing traffic issues.
He directed the authorities concerned to incorporate appropriately located interchanges in the design to improve accessibility and public convenience.
Mr Afridi also instructed that the project’s planning and design should adopt a forward-looking approach, keeping in view future traffic flows, urban expansion and the long-term mobility requirements of the city to ensure the infrastructure remains effective for decades.
The chief minister further directed officials to engage with the National Highway Authority to pursue the development of an interchange at the Peshawar Bus Terminal.
He said such a link would allow intercity traffic to access the route directly without entering the urban core, thereby reducing pressure on city roads.
The meeting also asked the relevant departments to carry out a detailed feasibility study on including a Bus Rapid Transit track along the proposed ring road in order to integrate modern public transport into the city’s long-term mobility framework.
