India using water as weapon: Ishaq Dar

ISLAMABAD
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has said that unilateral actions by India regarding Indus Water Treaty (IWT) has posed grave threats to peace and security in South Asia.
India is using water as weapon, he said this while addressing foreign diplomats here.
He stated India suspended IWT unilaterally in April 2025. Indian move is gross violation of article 26 of Vienna Convention.
He pointed out extraordinary changes were recorded in River Chenab flow twice this year. Immense fluctuation was noticed in water flow from April 30 to May 21 and December 7 to 15, 2025.
India released water in river Chenab without prior notice. Necessary data and information were not provided to Pakistan under agreement.
He held Pakistan adopted formal diplomatic and legal way through its Indus Water Commissioner. The recent Indian move is clear example of use of water as weapon by India.
While inviting attention of world countries he said Indian steps are posing threat to food security in Pakistan.
India should discharge its obligations as per IWT. India is out to weaken the agreement in organized way.
He indicated the projects like Kushan Ganga and Ratlay defy the technical conditions of the project.
India is continuing construction of illegal dams. The capability of storing water of India and its illegal use is on rise due to construction of dams.
He warned that Pakistan had to face the threats of flood and drought due to such steps of India. Indian water steps have potential to create human crisis.
IWT is an important source of peace and stability in South Asia.
He informed the diplomats that escaping from resolution of disputes by India is negation of international laws.
The arbitration court upheld the status of IWT in June and August 2025.
The IWT is in place and it is mandatory for the parties concerned to uphold it.
He remarked Indian interior minister announced not to restore the agreement besides changing the direction of water. Pakistan has made it clear that stopping water or changing its direction will be declaration of war.
He made it clear Pakistan raised this issue repeatedly in UN Security Council. Pakistan is desirous of resolving the problems in peaceful manner. However we will make no compromise on our water rights.
The international community should play its role for complete revival of this agreement.
