Responsible journalism pillar of democracy: Shafi

Adviser to the Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Information, Shafi Jan in his remarks on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day on Sunday said free and responsible journalism is a fundamental pillar of a strong democratic society.
He emphasized that journalism not only raises public awareness but also ensures accountability within the government system. He added that access to reliable information, promotion of dialogue and restoration of public trust are essential roles played by the media.
Highlighting the importance of journalism, Shafi Jan said that a free and responsible press is vital for peace, economic stability, sustainable development and the protection of human rights.
Discussing current challenges, he noted that while the speed of information dissemination has increased, threats such as fake news, propaganda and the misuse of artificial intelligence have also grown, posing serious challenges to journalism.
He expressed concern that press freedom is under pressure worldwide, while journalists face security risks and economic difficulties that require immediate attention.
Shafi Jan reaffirmed that the provincial government is committed to ensuring the safety of journalists, promoting freedom of expression and protecting professional rights. He also paid tribute to journalists who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
