In a message issued by the Prime Minister’s Office under embargo until January 5, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that the observance of Right to Self-Determination Day reaffirms Pakistan’s unwavering support for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) in their just struggle. He recalled that the UN Commission for India and Pakistan adopted a landmark resolution on January 5, 1949, calling for a free and impartial plebiscite under UN auspices, which remains unimplemented due to India’s continued occupation.
The Prime Minister said that the suffering of Kashmiris has further intensified since India’s unilateral and illegal actions of August 5, 2019, aimed at altering the demographic and political landscape of the occupied territory. He highlighted grave human rights violations, including arbitrary detentions, suppression of political leadership, media restrictions, and so-called cordon and search operations.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stressed that despite decades of coercive measures, India has failed to break the resolve of the Kashmiri people. He emphasized that a just resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute is the only path to durable peace in South Asia and urged the international community to press India to reverse its illegal actions, repeal draconian laws, and grant Kashmiris their right to self-determination in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.
He reiterated that Pakistan will continue to extend unwavering moral, political, and diplomatic support to the Kashmiri people and will remain their voice at every available international forum.
