ITP checks over 11,500 bikers, impounds 4,181 motorcycles

ISLAMABAD
Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) checked over 11,500 motorcyclists, impounded 4,181 motorcycles and took legal action against more than 8,000 riders during a citywide enforcement campaign against traffic violations in the federal capital. An ITP official told APP on Sunday that cases were also registered against 269 riders involved in serious violations during the special drive launched at the directions of Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Islamabad Muhammad Sarfraz Virk.
The official said the campaign mainly targeted lane violations, one-wheeling, riding without helmets and reckless driving to improve road safety and traffic discipline in the city. CTO Virk said such violations not only caused accidents but also posed serious threats to the lives and property of citizens.
He said Islamabad Traffic Police was continuing indiscriminate action against traffic violators to ensure safer roads in the federal capital.
The CTO added that, alongside strict enforcement, awareness among citizens regarding road safety and traffic discipline was also among the key priorities of Islamabad Traffic Police.
According to the official, under a special road safety awareness campaign, 25,813 citizens were educated regarding traffic laws, lane discipline, helmet usage and safe driving practices.
He said extensive awareness campaigns were also being conducted on various social media platforms to spread road safety awareness among the maximum number of citizens.
Talking to APP, a government employee Tahir said traffic police mainly focused on motorcyclists while major violations by cars and other vehicles often went unchecked.
At almost every checkpoint, several motorcycles can be seen stopped for checking, he remarked.
Another commuter, Bilal Shabbir, told APP that office-goers trying to reach workplaces early in the morning sometimes faced delays despite having M-Tag installed on their vehicles.
We leave homes early to avoid rush hours, but frequent checking at different points sometimes causes delays in reaching offices, he said.
Virk urged citizens to act responsibly by following traffic laws, maintaining lane discipline and cooperating with Islamabad Traffic Police to help make roads safer for everyone.
