Construction of new dams is inevitable: PM

ISLAMABAD
Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has directed that projects like Diamer-Bhasha Dam should be completed on a priority basis saying construction of new dams is indispensible to enhance potential of water storage, supply water required for agriculture, energy production and prevention of floods in the country.
Our economic self-sufficiency relies on inexpensive electricity and agriculture.
He said this while presiding over a meeting in Islamabad Tuesday regarding Diamer-Bhasha Dam and other water reservoirs.
He directed that all obstacles in the way of construction Diamer-Bhasha Dam must be addressed immediately to ensure its early completion.
He stressed that the construction of new dams is essential for increasing water storage capacity, ensuring sufficient water supply for agriculture and preventing floods. He noted that our economic self-reliance depends on affordable electricity and agriculture. For this, we must enhance water storage and ensure its efficient utilization.
Meeting was attended by federal minister Ahsan Iqbal, law minister Azam Nazir Tarar, minister for water resources Moin Watoo, advisor to PM on political affairs Rana Sana Ullah , chief minister Gilgit-Baltistan and senior officials.
