CM Gandapur chairs meeting on Peshawar’s traffic challenges, approve various plans

An important meeting held here on Monday with Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur in the chair, reviewed the ongoing traffic issues in Peshawar.
According to an official handout, the meeting was attended by the key provincial cabinet members, lawmakers, chief secretary, administrative secretaries, and local government representatives. The meeting focused on addressing the growing traffic congestion and improving urban mobility. The committee tasked with reviewing the traffic problems in Peshawar presented a detailed report, including an analysis of the legal framework and the primary causes of traffic challenges.
The proposed short-term and medium-term traffic management plans were approved, aiming for an immediate, sustainable solution. These plans will pave the way for the development of a long-term strategy. The Chief Minister emphasized that a clear framework has been established for the roles and responsibilities of all relevant departments and institutions involved in implementing these plans, with strict timelines set for their execution. A monitoring mechanism will be put in place to track progress regularly.
In his address, Chief Minister Gandapur stressed the importance of Peshawar as the face of the province and vowed to make it a model city for others. He announced that a special package for Peshawar will be included in the next annual development program, and called on elected representatives to prioritize the city’s development over politics.
The meeting also approved immediate recruitment to fill vacant positions within the relevant departments for the successful rollout of the traffic plans. Additionally, infrastructure improvements, such as expanding the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, constructing underpasses, and developing zebra crossings and overhead bridges, were discussed.
A decision was made to complete the missing link of the Northern Bypass up to Nasir Bagh by the end of the month, with ongoing work on the road to Takhta Beg progressing swiftly. The Chief Minister also instructed authorities to tackle illegal parking, ensure compliance with parking regulations, and adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards encroachments.
Further measures included a review of parking maps for plazas, the regulation of taxi services, the introduction of a color scheme for rickshaws, and the installation and repair of street lights. Additionally, plans for relocating the Sabzi Mandi at Bacha Khan Chowk outside the city were approved to ease traffic flow.
