Chairman Senate Yousaf Raza Gilani calls for collective National Action against breast cancer

Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has emphasized that women’s health, dignity, and empowerment are the foundation of national progress. He was addressing a seminar on breast cancer awareness organized jointly by Marriott Hotel and Maroof International Hospital in Islamabad.
Highlighting the growing threat of breast cancer in Pakistan, Chairman Senate Gilani said, “A healthy mother is the guarantee of a healthy family. Without a collective national effort, controlling breast cancer will not be possible.”
He commended Maroof International Hospital for its awareness campaigns and community services, noting that the hospital’s initiatives have brought hope and awareness to thousands of families. “The Pink Ribbon month should not remain a symbolic campaign — it is time for concrete action,” he remarked, urging the nation to move “beyond the ribbon” with practical steps for prevention, early detection, and treatment.
Chairman Senate Gilani expressed deep concern over the social stigma and lack of awareness that hinder timely diagnosis. He underscored the need for equal access to early screening, treatment, and psychological support for all women, regardless of background or income.

Referring to the National Institute of Health (Amendment) Act 2025, he announced the establishment of a National Cancer Patient Registry, saying it will enable effective, evidence-based policymaking for cancer control.
Gilani also highlighted the importance of mental health support for cancer patients and their families, stating, “Healing the mind is as essential as healing the body.”
He recommended setting up psychological counselling and support groups nationwide to assist patients in coping with the emotional challenges of the disease.
“Parliament is fully committed to promoting women’s health and ensuring equitable healthcare access across Pakistan,” he reaffirmed. “If any woman is deprived of care or attention, it is a collective failure of our society. We must all stand for our mothers, sisters, and daughters.”
At the conclusion of the seminar, Chairman Senate Yousaf Raza Gilani honored Alia Agha as the Brand Ambassador for Breast Cancer Awareness, paying tribute to the courage and resilience of women fighting the disease.
