From Ancient Practice to Global Sport and Its Rise in Pakistan

The Evolution of Archery

PESHAWAR
Archery (Archery) has a rich history that spans thousands of years, originating from early human civilizations that used the bow and arrow for hunting and warfare. In ancient cultures, particularly in Egypt, China, and India, archery was considered a symbol of skill and strength. It wasn’t just a tool for survival but also played a crucial role in various battles throughout history.
As modern weaponry evolved, the importance of archery diminished on the battlefield. However, it gained new life as a sport, especially in Europe and England, where it became a favorite pastime among the nobility and elite classes.
The modern Olympic Games, initiated in 1896, included archery as an official sport by 1900. It made a full comeback in 1972, and today, archery enjoys significant recognition as a popular Olympic sport, with athletes from around the world competing at the highest level.
Archery gained global popularity as countries across Asia, Europe, and America embraced it as part of their national sports programs. Nations like China and South Korea have produced world-class archers, solidifying their dominance in the international arena.
In Pakistan, archery has grown in popularity over recent years. Various sports organizations and federations are actively working to promote the sport, with the Pakistan Archery Federation playing a pivotal role. Youth training programs have been established nationwide, and many national and international competitions are being held, showcasing the talent of Pakistani archers.
In rural areas, particularly in the northern regions, archery has traditionally been seen as a means of hunting. Both government and private sectors are contributing to the promotion of archery as a sport, encouraging a new generation of athletes.
When discussing the rise of archery in Pakistan, it would be an oversight not to mention the key contributions of Visal Muhammad Khan. A well-known figure in sports from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Khan formally introduced archery as a sport in Pakistan. He not only founded the Pakistan Archery Federation but was also unanimously elected as its first Secretary General by the provincial associations and federation members. Through his personal dedication and resources, Wisal Muhammad Khan tirelessly promoted archery throughout the country.
Without government support, Visal Muhammad Khan organized training camps in various cities and educational institutions to teach the younger generation the art of archery. His efforts have led to the recognition of archery as a structured sport in Pakistan, and this legacy continues.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sarfaraz Khan, Secretary of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Archery Association, has also played an instrumental role in the development of the sport.
A skilled archer and qualified coach, Sarfaraz Khan has implemented several initiatives to train young talent, resulting in the emergence of many gifted archers from the province.
The combined efforts of individuals like Visal Muhammad Khan and Sarfaraz Khan have been pivotal in establishing a solid foundation for the growth of archery in Pakistan, ensuring its continued development and success in the years to come.
