South Africa’s U19 cricket team faced a leadership shake-up just a week before the commencement of the home World Cup as Captain David Teeger was removed from his position due to comments expressing support for Israel.
Teeger, initially slated to lead the host country’s age-group side in the tournament starting on January 19, will now continue as a player.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) officially announced Teeger’s dismissal on Friday, citing concerns about potential protests and risks surrounding the tournament.
The decision was made in anticipation of protests related to Israel’s actions in Gaza, with CSA revealing that the focus might particularly target Teeger’s position as captain, potentially leading to conflict or violence.
CSA, prioritising the safety of participants and spectators, explained the rationale behind the decision: “CSA has a primary duty to safeguard the interests and safety of all those involved in the World Cup and must accordingly respect the expert advice of those responsible for the safety of participants and spectators.”
South Africa had taken over the hosting rights from Sri Lanka for the U19 men’s World Cup, following the latter’s removal due to government interference in sports administration.
Teeger, previously honoured as the Rising Star at the ABSA Jewish Achiever Awards, dedicated the award to Jewish soldiers in Israel during an acceptance speech in October.
Teeger’s remarks had stirred controversy, with pro-Palestine protestors reportedly questioning his selection outside Newlands in Cape Town before the New Year’s Test between South Africa and India.
Despite being removed from the captaincy, Teeger remains part of the squad, and CSA is actively preparing for potential protests during the tournament, emphasising the decision’s alignment with the safety and best interests of all stakeholders involved.
