Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman rejects Defamation Law, vows to resist

Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has rejected the defamation law, calling it a “black law” passed in haste and darkness. Speaking to journalists in Karachi, he said Jamaat-e-Islami was the first party to oppose and reject the bill. He questioned the Governor of Punjab’s departure from the country and the Acting Governor’s signing of the bill, which he believes amounts to a ban on freedom of expression.
Rehman accused the Muslim League-N and People’s Party of being equally involved in the law’s preparation, approval, and implementation. He vowed to consult with journalists, civil society, and all schools of thought to mobilize resistance against the law, which he believes is an “anti-human” attack on the constitutional right to free speech.
