SEOUL: South Korean President Lee Jae Myung will attend a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkiye, from July \u200b7 to 8, Seoul\u2019s national security adviser said on Friday.<\/p>\n
Lee aims to build defense industry cooperation between South Korea and NATO member countries, Wi Sung-lac told a press briefing.<\/p>\n
In Ankara, Lee will meet NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and take part in a group \u200csummit with leaders \u200cfrom Indo-Pacific countries, including Japan, \u200bNew \u200cZealand \u2060and \u200bAustralia, Wi \u2060said.<\/p>\n
He will also attend the NATO defense industry forum and deliver a speech at one of its sessions.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs geopolitical instability deepens, NATO member states are increasing their defense spending and also pursuing efforts to strengthen their own domestic \u2060defense production capabilities,\u201d Wi said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSouth Korea, which \u200cis not a \u200cNATO member, must advance partnerships with \u200bNATO based on \u200cthe alliance\u2019s standards to facilitate exports of defense \u200cmaterials,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Lee\u2019s office is arranging more summits with leaders of other countries for defense cooperation, Wi said without elaborating.<\/p>\n
After the two-day trip to Turkiye, \u200cLee will arrive in Ulaanbaatar on July 9 for a three-day state \u2060visit \u2060at the invitation of Mongolian President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, Lee\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n
On the first day of the visit, the two leaders will hold a summit, issue a joint statement and sign multiple memorandums of understanding, Wi said.<\/p>\n
South Korea views Mongolia as a key partner given its reserves of critical minerals and as a neighbor that can contribute to peace on the Korean \u200bPeninsula through its \u200bclose ties with North Korea, Wi said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
