Alphabet\u2019s Google said on Thursday it weakened a network of Internet-connected devices being used to conceal \u200band route malicious online traffic, acting against the NetNut residential proxy operator and the Popa botnet.<\/p>\n
Google took action in partnership with the FBI and Lumen, among others.<\/p>\n
The tech giant said it disabled accounts and services used in NetNut-related malware command-and-control operations and shared technical intelligence on the \u200cgroup\u2019s infrastructure \u200cwith law enforcement and industry \u200bpartners \u200cto \u2060support broader enforcement \u200befforts.<\/p>\n
Residential \u2060proxy networks route Internet traffic through consumer IP addresses, masking its origin and bypassing security defenses, a feature that, while having legitimate uses, is frequently exploited for cybercrime.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe believe our coordinated actions have caused significant degradation to NetNut\u2019s proxy network and its \u2060business operations, reducing the available pool of \u200cdevices for the \u200cproxy operator by millions,\u201d Google said \u200bin a blog.<\/p>\n
NetNut\u2019s parent, \u200cIsrael-based web data provider Alarum Technologies, was informed \u200cof the seizure of some of its domains by the FBI on Thursday, the company told Reuters.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlarum takes this matter seriously and will fully cooperate with law \u200cenforcement to ensure any misuse of its infrastructure is thoroughly investigated and those \u2060responsible \u2060are held to account.\u201d<\/p>\n
Separately on the day, Bloomberg News reported that the FBI has been been examining potential links between NetNut and Popa for more than a year, citing documents seen and people familiar with the situation.<\/p>\n
The investigation was one of several reviewed by officials from multiple federal law enforcement agencies during a Colorado meeting on proxy networks late last year, the report said.<\/p>\n
