BEIJING: China\u2019s ruling Communist Party must keep pace with changing circumstances while safeguarding the advances it has made, \u200bPresident Xi Jinping said on Wednesday during celebrations for its 105th founding anniversary.<\/p>\n
Xi did not identify specific opportunities or risks in his 40-minute speech at Beijing\u2019s Great Hall of the People, but analysts say slower economic growth and demographic decline pose key challenges for the world\u2019s second largest economy.<\/p>\n
\u201cChina\u2019s \u200cdevelopment is currently \u200cin a period where strategic \u200bopportunities, \u200cand \u2060risks \u200band challenges, \u2060coexist,\u201d said Xi, its most powerful leader since Mao Zedong.<\/p>\n
He called for the party to coordinate better to tackle domestic and international issues.<\/p>\n
Faced with external challenges from Western-led curbs on advanced technology to turbulent trade ties with the United States and tension over \u2060Taiwan, party leaders consider it a critical task \u200cto strengthen their grasp \u200con all aspects of Chinese society.<\/p>\n
Founded \u200bby just dozens of \u200cChinese revolutionaries in 1921, the party now claims \u200cmore than 100 million members, or 7.2 percent of China\u2019s population.<\/p>\n
Today, its ambition is to transform itself into the world\u2019s \u201cmost powerful political party,\u201d from the world\u2019s \u201clargest political party,\u201d the \u200cofficial Xinhua news agency said in an editorial this week.<\/p>\n
Xi urged members to stamp \u2060out \u2060aspects harmful to the party\u2019s advancement and \u201cpurity,\u201d as well as \u201call viruses that erode the party\u2019s healthy body.\u201d<\/p>\n
Since coming to power in 2012, Xi has worked to reassert the party\u2019s unquestioned authority at home, demand loyalty and unflinching discipline among its ranks, and expand China\u2019s global influence.<\/p>\n
