SEOUL\/BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping said he and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reached an \u201cimportant consensus\u201d \u200band agreed to safeguard regional and global peace, in a message of thanks following his visit to Pyongyang, North Korean state media KCNA said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
In the message carried in full by KCNA, Xi said the two sides had \u201cexchanged in-depth views on issues of common concern and reached a series of \u200cimportant joint \u200cconsensus,\u201d reflecting their determination to further \u200bdeepen \u200cties.<\/p>\n
Looking \u2060ahead, \u200bXi said \u2060he was willing to work with Kim \u201cbased on fundamental and long-term interests\u201d to \u201csteadily safeguard, consolidate and develop\u201d bilateral ties and contribute more to regional and global peace and development.<\/p>\n
He also said the visit had been \u201csuccessfully concluded\u201d and that relations had entered \u201ca new historical stage,\u201d \u2060while expressing hope to meet Kim again.<\/p>\n
Xi \u200cvisited Pyongyang from Monday \u200cto Tuesday in his first trip to \u200bNorth Korea in seven \u200cyears. Xi said the visit had established a \u200cdeeper, more comprehensive understanding yielding a clearer path for development of ties, China\u2019s official Xinhua news agency said.<\/p>\n
The two leaders agreed to expand cooperation across politics, the economy, trade and culture, \u200cwhile pledging closer strategic communication between their governments, according to both countries\u2019 state media.<\/p>\n
\u201cPractical \u2060cooperation is \u2060an important driving force behind the development of China-DPRK relations,\u201d Xinhua said, noting also sectors such as agriculture, technology and construction.<\/p>\n
Both nations should also capitalize on a full reopening of border crossings and the resumption of civil aviation flights and international passenger trains, Chinese official media said.<\/p>\n
