TAIPEI: Taiwan said Monday that China\u2019s maritime operation in waters to the east of the island democracy was \u201cprovocative\u201d and \u201cexpansionism in disguise.\u201d<\/p>\n
Chinese ships are conducting a \u201claw enforcement operation\u201d in response to talks between Japan and the Philippines to draw a boundary in waters to the east of Taiwan, Chinese state media said Saturday.<\/p>\n
China, which asserts Taiwan is part of its territory, called the talks \u201cillegal\u201d and has claimed exclusive control over the waters.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s nothing but expansionism in disguise that threatens regional peace & stability,\u201d Taiwan\u2019s National Security Council chief Joseph Wu wrote on X.<\/p>\n
Defense Minister Wellington Koo said the Chinese actions were \u201cprovocative.\u201d<\/p>\n
Koo told reporters that the move was a \u201ccognitive warfare operation\u201d designed to claim that the waters off Taiwan\u2019s east coast fell within China\u2019s \u201cenforcement jurisdiction.\u201d<\/p>\n
Taiwan\u2019s coast guard has deployed seven patrol vessels to monitor the Chinese ships.<\/p>\n
The Taiwanese vessels expelled four Chinese ships from waters off the island\u2019s southernmost tip on Sunday.<\/p>\n
