LONDON: Security agencies from \u200cthe \u201cFive Eyes\u201d alliance which includes the United States and Britain issued a warning on Wednesday about Chinese spies aggressively \u200busing online job platforms to recruit people with access to sensitive information.<\/p>\n
The \u201cSafeguarding Our Secrets\u201d bulletin says China\u2019s military intelligence services were using a wide array of professional networking sites and online recruitment services to target those in government, the military or anyone who could access classified information.<\/p>\n
\u201cChinese \u200cmilitary intelligence services \u200cultimately seek to acquire privileged \u200bmilitary, \u200cpolitical \u2060and \u200beconomic intelligence that \u2060can provide China with a strategic and tactical advantage over the Five Eyes,\u201d the domestic security agencies from the US, Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, said.<\/p>\n
Although there have been similar warnings from individual countries in the past, the joint \u2060bulletin was described as unprecedented. Beijing has \u200crepeatedly rejected such \u200cespionage claims, calling them \u201cpure\u2002fabrication and malicious \u200bslander.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the bulletin, the \u200cFive Eyes agencies said Chinese spies were particularly \u200ctargeting those who specialized in defense, foreign affairs and intelligence, and military personnel, including those stationed in the Indo-Pacific region.<\/p>\n
Also at risk were journalists, think tank employees \u200cor those with peripheral access to government data.<\/p>\n
It said the spies used \u201can aggressive \u2060online \u2060recruitment strategy\u201d with successful candidates then pressured to provide confidential information \u201cfor unspecified clients who are associated with the Chinese government.\u201d<\/p>\n
Those who were recruited could be paid anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand dollars per report, and offered more for increasingly sensitive information, the bulletin said. The US has previously warned about Chinese intelligence using deception to target current and former US government \u200bemployees while Britain\u2019s MI5 security \u200bservice last November cautioned lawmakers about Chinese agents trying to spy on parliament.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
