BERLIN: China \u200chas taken ownership of more than 11,300 patents developed in Germany over the past two decades, \u200baccording to a study by the German Economic Institute (IW) commissioned by the Bertelsmann Foundation.<\/p>\n
Nearly one in three inventions developed in Germany is owned by a foreign entity. Of those, almost a third are \u200cheld by \u200cUS owners and about \u200b11 percent \u200cby \u2060Swiss owners, \u200bthe study \u2060showed on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The shift is especially pronounced in mechanical engineering, where patent applications rose to 4,300 in 2022 from 3,300 in 2000.<\/p>\n
The study said China had been particularly active in acquiring \u2060technologies in the sector<\/p>\n
\u201cGerman companies \u200calso hold patents \u200cabroad. That is part \u200bof normal competition,\u201d \u200cIW expert Oliver Koppel said.<\/p>\n
But he \u200csaid Beijing directed Western acquisitions strategically while keeping its own market relatively closed to foreign investors.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is an imbalance,\u201d Koppel said, \u200cadding that Europe must examine more closely where strategically relevant technologies are \u2060migrating.<\/p>\n
Germany\u2019s \u2060domestic innovative strength is weakening due to insufficient investment in research and development, IW said.<\/p>\n
Germany ranked third worldwide in R&D spending in 2000, when its outlays were twice as high as China\u2019s, but it had slipped to sixth place by 2021.<\/p>\n
China, by contrast, has increased its R&D \u200bspending twentyfold over \u200bthe period, the institute said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
