MOSCOW: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday called on Europe to develop its own air defense systems and urged more support from Washington after Russia\u2019s latest deadly drone and missile barrage.<\/p>\n
\u201cEurope needs its own anti-ballistic defense so that this war can finally be brought to an end. And assistance from the United States in supplying missiles for Patriot systems is absolutely necessary,\u201d Zelensky wrote on social media.<\/p>\n
The Russian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday that its massive overnight strike on \u200bUkraine was a response to what it called \u201cterrorist acts\u201d against targets inside Russia and said it had struck a range of Ukrainian military targets.<\/p>\n
Ukrainian authorities said that Russian drones and missiles had pounded the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and other cities early on Tuesday, killing at \u200cleast 11 \u200cpeople and wounding more \u200bthan \u200c100 following \u2060days \u200bof warnings \u2060about Moscow\u2019s plans for a major assault.<\/p>\n
\u201cOvernight, in response to terrorist acts of the Kyiv regime, the armed forces of the Russian Federation carried out a massive strike using high-precision long-range air-, land-, and sea-based weapons,\u201d the Russian Defense \u2060Ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n
It said Russia \u200chad used hypersonic \u200cmissiles and drones to attack seven \u200bUkrainian regions including \u200cKyiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv, successfully targeting sites useful \u200cto the Ukrainian armed forces such as fuel and transport facilities and military airfields.<\/p>\n
The Kremlin warned last week that Russia would start to carry out \u201csystematic strikes\u201d \u200con targets in Kyiv in retaliation for what it said was a devastating \u2060Ukrainian \u2060drone attack on a student dormitory in Russian-held Luhansk in eastern Ukraine, which killed 21 people.<\/p>\n
Ukraine said it had targeted a drone command center in the area not students. Putin said on Monday evening that Kyiv had \u201copened a new page in a series of crimes\u201d with the dormitory strike and with a later strike on an apartment building \u200bin a Russian-held part \u200bof Ukraine\u2019s Kherson region.
