BEIJING: China\u2019s Coast Guard \u200con Monday said it had conducted \u201claw enforcement\u201d patrols in Taiwan\u2019s eastern waters in response to Japan and the Philippines\u2019 plans to launch maritime border delimitation talks, which overlap with areas China claims.<\/p>\n
Japan and the Philippines said last week they would begin formal talks on delimiting the maritime boundary of the exclusive economic zone and the continental shelf between the two countries \u201cin accordance with international law.\u201d<\/p>\n
While they did not give details, China\u2019s foreign ministry on Friday said that area \u200ccovered waters east \u200cof Taiwan, which Beijing views as its \u200cown \u2060territory, adding that \u2060such talks are \u201ccompletely illegal, null and void.\u201d<\/p>\n
China\u2019s Coast Guard said in a statement that a flotilla had carried out the patrol in accordance with the law to the east of Taiwan, though it did not specify where exactly.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a necessary action taken in response to \u2060Japan and the Philippines unilaterally announcing the initiation \u200cof maritime boundary delimitation negotiations in \u200cthe waters east of China\u2019s Taiwan island,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe urge \u200cJapan and the Philippines to immediately cease all illegal actions \u200cthat infringe upon China\u2019s sovereign rights and interests.\u201d<\/p>\n
Taiwan\u2019s coast guard had no immediate comment. The Philippine and Japanese embassies in Beijing did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n
Late Sunday, Taiwan\u2019s foreign \u200cministry denounced China\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n
\u201cChina has no right to interfere in Taiwan\u2019s territorial sovereignty and sovereign rights \u2060over \u2060its relevant maritime areas,\u2019 it said.<\/p>\n
Taiwan reports Chinese warships and warplanes operating around the island almost daily, sometimes joined by Chinese coast guard ships.<\/p>\n
Last month, a Chinese coast guard ship approached close to the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands at the top end of the South China Sea, but left after a stand-off with Taiwan\u2019s coast guard.<\/p>\n
China claims Taiwan and almost the entire South China Sea via a \u201cnine-dash line\u201d on its maps that cuts into the exclusive economic zones of the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia.
