VATICAN CITY: Pope Leo XIV will release on Monday his long-awaited manifesto on artificial intelligence (AI), a bid to address ethical and social challenges as the technology rapidly develops worldwide.<\/p>\n
The US pope will attend the presentation of the \u201cMagnifica Humanitas\u201d (Magnificent Humanity) encyclical at the Vatican in person \u2014 a first for the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n
He will be joined not only by officials from the Holy See but experts including the co-founder of the American startup Anthropic, a key player in the booming AI landscape.<\/p>\n
Anthropic is in a legal battle with the US military after refusing to change its internal policy prohibiting the use of its Claude model for lethal autonomous warfare or mass surveillance.<\/p>\n
Leo has denounced the race for AI in the military field, saying that \u201cdelegating decisions concerning the life and death of human beings to machines\u201d is a \u201cdestructive spiral.\u201d<\/p>\n
Since his election a year ago as the Church\u2019s first US pope, he has repeatedly warned of the dangers of AI, including \u201cthe gradual replacement of reality by its simulation.\u201d<\/p>\n
And he has slammed the \u201cenvironmental devastation\u201d caused by the \u201cfrenzied race\u201d for rare earth elements, which are essential for modern electronics.<\/p>\n
– \u2018Wake-up call\u2019 –<\/p>\n
AI could be worth up to $4.8 trillion (4.13 trillion euros) by 2033, a 25-fold increase in a decade, while concentrating its profits in the hands of a limited few, according to the UN.<\/p>\n
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres last year warned \u201cthe window is closing to shape AI \u2014 for peace, for justice, for humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n
Leo has made the hot-button issue a cornerstone of his papacy in dedicating to it his first encyclical \u2014 a document which lays the basis for Church teaching and longer-term debate.<\/p>\n
Experts say \u201cMagnifica Humanitas\u201d could prove as influential as Pope Francis\u2019s \u201cLaudato Si,\u201d a 2015 climate manifesto that triggered political and civic reactions worldwide.<\/p>\n
The Vatican sees this new text as an extension of its social teachings on \u201cprotecting people in the AI era.\u201d<\/p>\n
It was signed on May 15, the 135th anniversary of a 1891 encyclical by Leo XIII which laid the foundations of the Church\u2019s social doctrine during the Industrial Revolution.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Industrial Revolution transformed the labor market, people\u2019s lives, hegemony, and power dynamics,\u201d said Marijana Grbesa, political science professor at the University of Zagreb, and a speaker at an AI conference in the Vatican.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt the time, it was necessary to train individuals in the use of tools. The same is true today: we need to train and educate,\u201d she told AFP.<\/p>\n
The pope, she said, will emphasize that \u201ceducation is not enough today.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a wake-up call for the whole of civilization,\u201d to \u201cbe rational when we use these tools.\u201d<\/p>\n
– \u2018Perception of reality\u2019 –<\/p>\n
Leo has emphasized the need for \u201cdigital literacy… to understand how algorithms shape our perception of reality.\u201d<\/p>\n
In April he warned against the use of AI to fuel \u201cpolarization, conflict, fear, and violence.\u201d And in January he lamented \u201cthe lack of transparency in the creation of the algorithms\u201d that govern the operation of various chatbots, whose use is growing rapidly worldwide.<\/p>\n
The release of \u201cMagnificent Humanity\u201d follows several years of study by the Church of AI-related technologies.<\/p>\n
As early as 2020, the Holy See launched the \u201cRome Appeal for an AI Ethic,\u201d which called for new technologies to respect human dignity.<\/p>\n
