TAIPEI: Taiwan is \u201cconfident\u201d in \u200cthe stable development of its ties with the US and Washington has repeatedly said its policy toward the island will not change, Foreign \u200bMinister Lin Chia-lung said on Monday of US President Donald Trump\u2019s upcoming China trip.<\/p>\n
Trump will be in Beijing from Wednesday to Friday for a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping where the issue of democratically governed Taiwan, which China views as its territory, is certain to come up.<\/p>\n
China has never renounced the use \u200cof force \u200cto bring Taiwan under its control.<\/p>\n
The \u200bUS \u200cis \u2060bound by \u200blaw \u2060to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said last week there needs to be stability across the Taiwan Strait.<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters at parliament in Taipei, Lin said the government is closely monitoring the upcoming Trump-Xi meeting.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have \u2060also maintained continuous communication with the United \u200cStates \u2014 whether through public statements \u200cfrom the US government or through \u200bnon-public channels. We are \u200cconfident in the stable development of Taiwan-US relations,\u201d he \u200csaid.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe US government has repeatedly expressed that its Taiwan policy will not change,\u201d Lin added.<\/p>\n
The US has pushed Taiwan, along with its major allies around the world, to spend more on \u200ctheir defense.<\/p>\n
But last week, Taiwan\u2019s opposition-controlled parliament passed a smaller special defense budget than \u2060the government \u2060had requested.<\/p>\n
A senior US official said on Sunday that the US was disappointed by parliament approving defense spending short of what Washington believes is needed.<\/p>\n
Lin said he hoped parliament could take \u201cremedial\u201d action so that the defense budget can support Taiwan\u2019s security policy, as maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is a common goal shared by Taiwan and like-minded nations.<\/p>\n
\u201cHowever, peace depends on strength \u2014 it requires demonstrating the defense capability for \u200bself-defense in order to deter \u200baggression,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
