\nFederal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal on Friday said that architecture serves as a defining hallmark of nations and civilizations, preserving their identity across generations. Addressing the Institute of Architects Pakistan (IAP) Convention and Exhibition-2026 here, the minister said history bears witness that while empires fade away, iconic structures continue to symbolize cultural identity.
\nHe cited examples such as Alhamra, Qurtuba, Badshahi Mosque and Taj Mahal as enduring monuments that keep civilizations alive in collective memory.
\nHe said architecture was not merely about constructing tall buildings but also about shaping human lifestyles, stressing that modern designs must prioritize accessibility, convenience and human needs.
\nGood design and efficient use of space, he added, enhance functionality and improve quality of life.
\nCalling architecture the \u201cpoetry of construction,\u201d he said it plays a central role in defining the identity of cities and nations.
\nExpressing concern over the neglect of historical heritage in the past, the minister stressed the need to revive and preserve it.
\nHe said that Karachi was once known for its distinctive yellow-stone buildings, a character that has now largely faded.
\nHe highlighted the importance of promoting local culture and regional identity alongside modern architectural trends.
\nHighlighting the challenges of climate change, Ahsan Iqbal mentioned the significance of environment-friendly construction and said providing dignified housing to every citizen was a fundamental responsibility of the government.
\nHe said efforts were underway to promote mortgage financing and encourage low-cost housing schemes, urging architects to play an active role in this sector.
\nThe minister further stressed the need for innovation in construction materials and techniques, adding that effective collaboration between architects and construction companies could significantly improve building standards.
\nLater, the minister visited the exhibition and inspected various company stalls.
