WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Thursday continued his attacks on German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, saying he was \u201cdoing \u200ba terrible job\u201d with his own country and should spend \u201cless time on interfering\u201d with Washington\u2019s effort to tackle \u201cthe Iran nuclear threat.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump has been sparring with Merz over the war in Iran in recent days. On Tuesday, he said Merz didn\u2019t know what he was talking about after the German \u200cleader said the \u200cIranians were humiliating the US \u200bin \u200ctalks \u2060to \u200bend the \u2060two-month-old war.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, during an Oval Office event, he said Merz was struggling at home with energy and immigration issues, and had failed to help resolve the Ukraine war.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s doing a terrible job,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd he\u2019s got a big problem with Ukraine, \u2060because they\u2019re in that mess.\u201d<\/p>\n
Merz, speaking at \u200ca military base, underscored \u200cthe importance of the transatlantic partnership \u200bbut did not mention Trump\u2019s \u200ccomments about troop reductions. He said Berlin \u200cremained in \u201ctrusting contact\u201d with partners and reaffirmed Germany\u2019s openness to taking part in a military mission to reopen the Strait of Hormuz once conditions were met.<\/p>\n
The strait has been \u200clargely blockaded since the outbreak of the war on February 28, throttling oil transports, \u2060driving energy \u2060prices sharply higher and disrupting vital supply chains, including for fertilizer.<\/p>\n
Trump made his first Thursday comments in a Truth Social post.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Chancellor of Germany should spend more time on ending the war with Russia\/Ukraine (Where he has been totally ineffective!), and fixing his broken Country, especially Immigration and Energy, and less time on interfering with those that are getting rid of the Iran Nuclear threat, thereby making the World, \u200bincluding Germany, a safer \u200bplace!\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
