GAROWE, Somalia: Suspected pirates have boarded a St. Kitts and Nevis-flagged general cargo vessel off \u200bSomalia\u2019s waters and were sailing it toward the Somali coastline, British maritime security groups Vanguard and Ambrey said.
\nSomali pirates caused havoc in the waters off the Horn of Africa nation\u2019s long coastline between 2008 and 2018. After a lull, pirate activity started \u200cto pick \u200cup again in late \u200b2023.
\nVanguard \u200csaid \u2060in \u200ba note \u2060late on Sunday it was aware of reports that armed pirates had hijacked the vessel, Sward, in the vicinity of Godobjiran, Somalia. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said the incident occurred 6 nautical miles north-east of \u2060Garacad, describing it as a \u200chijack.
\nThe ship\u2019s 15-person \u200ccrew comprises two Indian nationals \u200band 13 Syrians, Vanguard \u200csaid.
\n\u201cThe vessel is currently assessed to \u200cbe under pirate control and proceeding toward the Somali coastline. The Puntland Maritime Police Force has been notified,\u201d it said.
\nAmbrey said in a separate \u200cstatement the vessel had been sailing to Mombasa, Kenya from Suez, Egypt \u2060at \u2060the time it was boarded. All the crew were on the bridge except two mechanics, Ambrey said.
\nThe assistant information minister of the semi-autonomous region of Puntland and Puntland security officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
