BERLIN: Lufthansa flights were \u200csignificantly disrupted on Friday as cabin crew union UFO staged a one-day strike, the airline\u2019s third work stoppage in two months, impacting operations at its Frankfurt and Munich hubs.<\/p>\n
The strike, running from 12:01 a.m. to 10 p.m. local time (2201 GMT Thursday to 2000 GMT Friday), affected all Lufthansa departures from major hubs, while Cityline cabin crew participated at nine other German airports. \u200cTens of \u200cthousands of passengers will be impacted \u200cby \u2060cancelations and delays according \u2060to airport operator Fraport.<\/p>\n
UFO stated the industrial action stems from unresolved talks over working conditions for 19,000 cabin crew and redundancy terms for around 800 staff at Cityline, the Lufthansa feeder airline that is winding down operations.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis escalation \u2060has been a long time coming,\u201d \u200csaid Harry Jaeger, who \u200cleads negotiations for UFO. \u201cWe would have very much liked \u200cto avoid it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fraport, the operator of Frankfurt \u200cAirport, reported about 580 flights were canceled, affecting roughly 72,000 passengers out of 1,350 scheduled flights and 155,000 passengers expected for the day. The figures, Fraport \u200cnoted, cover all airlines operating at the airport, not just Lufthansa, and may evolve \u2060as \u2060the day progresses.<\/p>\n
Lufthansa Airlines brand chief Jens Ritter criticized the strike as \u201ccompletely disproportionate,\u201d asserting, \u201cRegulations from the past will not carry us into the future, we need to talk to the union about this.\u201d He also said the airline provides some of the best employment conditions in the sector.<\/p>\n
