LONDON: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will travel to the Gulf \u200bon Wednesday to hold talks with regional leaders to try to ensure the Strait of Hormuz opens permanently after a U.S.-Iran ceasefire, his office said.<\/p>\n
“I welcome the ceasefire agreement reached overnight, which will bring a moment of relief to \u200cthe region \u200cand the world,” Starmer said \u200bin \u200ca \u2060statement.<\/p>\n
“Together \u200bwith our \u2060partners we must do all we can to support and sustain this ceasefire, turn it into a lasting agreement and re-open the Strait of Hormuz.”<\/p>\n
Starmer, who has been heavily criticised by U.S. \u2060President Donald Trump for failing to support \u200cthe U.S. \u200cand Israeli strikes on Iran, has \u200bhosted multinational meetings \u200con how allies could support the reopening \u200cof the key strait that is fundamental to oil and gas trade.<\/p>\n
The British statement said Starmer would discuss diplomatic efforts to “support and uphold \u200cthe ceasefire in order to bring about a lasting resolution to \u2060the \u2060conflict and protect the UK and global economy from further threats”.<\/p>\n
The visit to the region had been planned before the ceasefire was announced.<\/p>\n
