Authorities concerned in Kohat Ghamgol Camp have launched an operation to repatriate Afghan refugees from the camp to their native land, Afghanistan as part of a broader nationwide initiative.
\nAccording to local administration officials on Monday, residents of the Ghamgol refugee camp have been given a 24-hour deadline to vacate the area. Refugees have been instructed to dismantle their own shelters and leave voluntarily; otherwise, enforcement action will be taken.
\nA local Afghan community elder, Ali Mir Mian Khel, stated that the camp was established between 1978 and 1979. It is spread across a large mountainous area and once housed around 50,000 people.
\nHe further explained that due to recent actions by the authorities, approximately 40,000 refugees are still residing in the three camps, while nearly 10,000 have already returned to Afghanistan.
\nMian Khel added that many refugees are now willing to return but require proper arrangements to ensure a safe journey. He highlighted concerns among families, particularly regarding the possibility of the Torkham Border being closed during transit. Refugees fear being stranded in harsh conditions, especially with women and children and facing exposure to rain and open skies.
