ISLAMABAD
\nPrime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed the Finance Division to talk to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over the levy structure on petrol and diesel, aiming to prevent any additional burden on the public amid surging global petroleum prices triggered by the ongoing Iran war.
\nAccording to sources, the prime minister on Tuesday asked the finance ministry to take up the matter with the IMF so that any required adjustment in petroleum prices could be offset against the existing levies.At present, the government imposes a levy of Rs100 per litre on petrol and Rs55 per litre on diesel.
\nThese levies on petroleum products are part of IMF conditionalities. The move comes as the government has already spent a massive subsidy of Rs129 billion to keep the fuel prices stable for consumers. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday said that the government was providing all possible facilities to investors in the digital and telecom sectors to promote the country\u2019s digital economy.
\n\u201cThe recent successful auction of 5G spectrum in Pakistan reflects that the government is moving in the right direction,\u201d the prime minister said while speaking to VEON Group CEO Kaan Terzioglu, who along with a delegation called on him at the PM House. He stated that Pakistan was pursuing a comprehensive and effective strategy to increase foreign investment and promote innovation in the information technology sector.
\n\u201cEffective use of information technology to achieve a cashless economy is among the government\u2019s top priorities,\u201d he said, adding that digitalization of the economic sector would help ensure transparency. Following the 5G spectrum auction, the prime minister noted that all relevant institutions were working in close coordination to provide high-quality internet services to the public through telecom operators.
\nHe further emphasized that Pakistan\u2019s youth could play a vital role in strengthening the economy and improving service delivery through active participation in information technology and digital platforms.He added that the growing interest of young people in telecom and IT is attracting international investors to Pakistan.
\nOn the occasion, Kaan Terzioglu, particularly appreciated the government\u2019s initiatives, under the Prime Minister\u2019s leadership, to promote a cashless economy and complete digitalization of the economy.
