{"id":95512,"date":"2026-03-28T11:40:21","date_gmt":"2026-03-28T06:40:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nabanews.pk\/en\/?p=95512"},"modified":"2026-03-28T11:40:21","modified_gmt":"2026-03-28T06:40:21","slug":"trump-says-us-may-not-be-there-for-nato-if-needed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nabanews.pk\/en\/trump-says-us-may-not-be-there-for-nato-if-needed\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump says US may not be there for NATO if needed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MIAMI: President Donald Trump on Friday reiterated his disappointment with NATO allies over their refusal to send military to help secure the Strait of Hormuz and said Washington may not help them in future if asked to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to an investment forum in Miami on Friday night, Trump said he was upset that European NATO countries had declined to provide material support to the \u200cUS as \u200cit nears the fourth week of \u200bits \u200congoing \u2060war \u200bon Iran.<\/p>\n<p>European \u2060allies were not consulted by the US on its decision to attack Iran late last month, and many leaders in the alliance opposed the action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey just weren\u2019t there,\u201d he said. \u201cWe spend hundreds of billions of dollars a year on NATO, hundreds, protecting them, and we would have always been there for them, but now, based on their actions, I guess we don\u2019t have to be, do we?\u201c<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would we be there for them if they\u2019re not there for us? They weren\u2019t there for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since the start of the US-Israeli offensive against Iran a month ago, Trump has repeatedly voiced frustration over Western allies\u2019 lack of support and reluctance to commit forces to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key sea lane for Gulf oil and gas exports vulnerable to Iranian attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Traffic through the narrow waterway has ground to a virtual standstill, leading to a surge in global energy prices.<\/p>\n<p>Six key powers including Britain, France, Germany and Japan say they are ready to \u201ccontribute to appropriate efforts\u201d but have not made any commitment.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has reserved some of his toughest criticism for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Last week, he dubbed its other members \u201cCOWARDS,\u201d and declared the alliance was a \u201cpaper tiger\u201d without the United States.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, he said on his Truth Social platform that the United States \u201cneeds nothing from NATO.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNATO nations have done absolutely nothing to help with the lunatic nation, now militarily decimated, of Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president has had a famously on-again-off-again relationship with the \u200calliance, and he has at various points made comments that provoked questions about \u2060his willingness \u2060to adhere to NATO\u2019s Article 5, which states an attack against one member state is an attack on all.<\/p>\n<p>On the campaign trail in 2024, Trump famously encouraged Russian President Vladimir Putin to attack European NATO countries that did not pay their fair share on defense.<\/p>\n<p>His relationship with several European leaders, however, appeared to improve over the course of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>But Washington-Brussels relations again soured in 2026 after Trump ramped up \u200bhis threats to invade \u200bGreenland, which is an overseas territory of Denmark.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MIAMI: President Donald Trump on Friday reiterated his disappointment with NATO allies over their refusal to send military to help secure the Strait of Hormuz and said Washington may not help them in future if asked to do so.
