Nepal\u2019s former prime minister KP Sharma Oli and ex-home minister Ramesh Lekhak were arrested Saturday morning over their alleged involvement in a deadly crackdown on protesters in September, police said.<\/p>\n
The detentions come a day after Prime Minister Balendra Shah and his cabinet were sworn in after the first elections since the 2025 uprising that toppled 74-year-old Oli\u2019s government.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey were arrested this morning and the process will move forward according to the law,\u201d Katmandu Valley police spokesman Om Adhikari told AFP.<\/p>\n
At least 76 people were killed in the anti-corruption youth uprising on September 8 and 9, according to the inquiry commission into the violence.<\/p>\n
At least 19 young people were killed in a crackdown on the first day of protests, which began over a brief social media ban, but tapped into longstanding fury over economic hardship.<\/p>\n
The unrest spread nationwide the following day as parliament and government offices were set ablaze, resulting in the government\u2019s collapse.<\/p>\n
During the caretaker administration a government-backed commission into the deadly uprising recommended the prosecution of Oli and other officials.<\/p>\n
The report said that it was \u201cnot established that there was an order to shoot,\u201d but said that \u201cno effort was made to stop or control the firing and, due to their negligent conduct, even minors lost their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n
Oli has previously denied ordering security forces to open fire on protesters.<\/p>\n
He told AFP during his failed bid for re-election in the March 5 poll that he blames \u201cinfiltrators\u201d for the violence.<\/p>\n
Police arrested Oli in Katmandu in the early hours of Saturday morning.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey have been arrested for investigation on the protests of September 8 and 9,\u201d Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, Katmandu district police spokesman said.<\/p>\n
AFP reporters later saw him walk into hospital, dressed all in white and surrounded by a heavy police guard.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe has been admitted at the hospital on doctor\u2019s advice,\u201d Bhattarai added.<\/p>\n
