TAMPA, Florida: US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Thursday the United States \u200bwas not expanding its military objectives in Iran, after President Donald Trump told Reuters the United States must be involved in choosing the next leader of Iran.<\/p>\n
The Pentagon earlier this week said the military campaign, known as Operation Epic Fury, is focused on destroying Iran\u2019s offensive missiles, missile production and navy, while not allowing Tehran to have a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no expansion in our objectives. We know exactly what we\u2019re trying to achieve,\u201d Hegseth said.<\/p>\n
He added that Trump was \u201chaving a heck of a \u200csay in who \u200cruns Iran given the ongoing operation.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a telephone interview \u200bwith \u200cReuters \u2060on Thursday, \u200bTrump said \u2060the United States would have to help pick the next person to lead the country. The US and Israeli military campaign that started on Saturday has hit targets across the country and triggered Iranian retaliatory strikes in the region as Tehran seeks to impose a high cost on the United States, Israel and their allies.<\/p>\n
Iran has attacked countries including Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. Fire crews in Bahrain extinguished a blaze at a \u2060refinery following a missile strike.<\/p>\n
Azerbaijan became the latest country \u200cdrawn in, as it accused Iran of firing \u200cdrones at its territory and ordered its southern airspace closed \u200bfor 12 hours.<\/p>\n
Hegseth said by striking \u200ccountries in the region, Iran would only bring them closer to the United \u200cStates.<\/p>\n
