CANBERRA, Australia: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday that he couldn\u2019t rule out his country\u2019s military participation in the escalating war in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
Carney\u2019s visit to Australia this week has been overshadowed by expanding war in the Middle East, sparked by a massive US-Israeli strike on Iran that killed its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.<\/p>\n
Speaking alongside local counterpart Anthony Albanese in Canberra, Carney was asked whether there was a situation in which Canada would get involved.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne can never categorically rule out participation,\u201d he said, while stressing the question was a \u201chypothetical\u201d one.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will stand by our allies,\u201d said Carney, adding that \u201cwe will always defend Canadians.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carney had said the US-Israeli strikes on Iran were \u201cinconsistent with international law.\u201d<\/p>\n
However, he supports the efforts to stop Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon \u2014 a position that Canada takes \u201cwith regret\u201d as it represented \u201canother example of the failure of the international order.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Canadian leader reiterated on Thursday his call for a \u201cde-escalation\u201d of the conflict.<\/p>\n
Carney\u2019s trip is part of a multi-country tour of the Asia-Pacific aimed at reducing reliance on the United States \u2014 a hedge against what he has described as a fading US-led global order.<\/p>\n
The Australia leg of the tour is aimed at bringing in investment and deepening ties with a like-minded \u201cmiddle power\u201d partner.<\/p>\n
\u2018Middle power\u2019 rallying cry<\/p>\n
On Thursday morning he issued a rallying cry in Australia\u2019s parliament to \u201cmiddle powers,\u201d urging them to work together in an increasingly hegemonic world order.<\/p>\n
Nations like Australia and Canada faced a stark choice \u2014 work together to help write the \u201cnew rules\u201d of the global order or have great powers do it for them, he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn this brave new world, middle powers cannot simply build higher walls and retreat behind them. We must work together,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cGreat powers can compel, but compulsion comes with costs, both reputational and financial,\u201d the former central banker added.<\/p>\n
\u201cMiddle powers like Australia and Canada hold this rare convening power because others know we mean what we say and we will match our values with our actions.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Canadian leader also said the two countries would together as \u201cstrategic collaborators\u201d to pool their vast combined rare earth mineral resources.<\/p>\n
And he detailed renewed cooperation in areas from defense to artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know we must work with others who share our values to build solid capabilities,\u201d he told parliament.<\/p>\n
Otherwise, he warned, they risked being \u201ccaught between the hyperscalers and the hegemons.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Canadian leader has frequently clashed with US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly threatened to annex Canada and slapped swingeing tariffs on the country.<\/p>\n
