WASHINGTON\/MADRID: US President Donald Trump threatened to impose a full US trade embargo on Spain on Tuesday \u200bafter the European and NATO ally refused to let the US military use its bases for missions linked to strikes on Iran.<\/p>\n
\u201cSpain has been terrible,\u201d Trump told reporters during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, adding that he had told Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to \u201ccut off all dealings\u201d with Spain.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re going to cut off all trade with Spain. We don\u2019t want anything to do with Spain,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
The US relocated 15 aircraft, including refueling tankers, from the Rota and Moron military bases in southern Spain after the country\u2019s Socialist leadership said it would not allow them to be used to attack Iran.<\/p>\n
Trump again referenced Spain\u2019s refusal to heed US calls for all NATO members to spend 5 percent of their GDP on defense, and added: \u201cSpain has absolutely nothing that we need.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAll business having to do \u200cwith Spain, I \u200chave the right to stop it. Embargoes \u2014 do anything I want with it \u2014 and \u200bwe \u200cmay \u2060do that with \u200bSpain,\u201d \u2060he said, again expressing his frustration with the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling last month that his broadest global tariffs were illegal under a national emergencies law.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
