CALIFORNIA: California said on Friday it will become the first US state to join the World Health Organization\u2019s \u200bglobal outbreak response network following the Trump administration\u2019s decision to pull Washington out of the WHO.<\/p>\n
The network, comprised of more than 360 technical institutions, responds to public health events with the deployment of staff and resources to affected countries. It \u200chas tackled \u200cmajor public health events, \u200cincluding \u2060COVID-19. The \u200bstate\u2019s \u200cdecision to join the network comes more than a year after US President Donald Trump gave notice that Washington would depart from the WHO. On Thursday, it officially withdrew from the agency, saying its decision \u2060reflected failures in the UN health agency\u2019s management of \u200cthe pandemic.<\/p>\n
California Governor Gavin \u200dNewsom decried the \u200dUnited States\u2019 move on Friday, calling it \u200da \u201creckless decision\u201d that will hurt many people.<\/p>\n
\u201cCalifornia will not bear witness to the chaos this decision will bring,\u201d Newsom said in a statement. \u201cWe \u200bwill continue to foster partnerships across the globe and remain at the \u2060forefront of public health preparedness, including through our membership as the only state in WHO\u2019s Global Outbreak Alert & Response Network.\u201d<\/p>\n
The governor\u2019s office said he met with the WHO\u2019s Director General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, this week, where they discussed collaborating to detect and respond to emerging public health threats.<\/p>\n
