{"id":92644,"date":"2026-01-23T11:41:51","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T06:41:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nabanews.pk\/en\/?p=92644"},"modified":"2026-01-23T11:41:51","modified_gmt":"2026-01-23T06:41:51","slug":"taiwan-offers-talks-with-ukraine-on-weapons-sanctions-busting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nabanews.pk\/en\/taiwan-offers-talks-with-ukraine-on-weapons-sanctions-busting\/","title":{"rendered":"Taiwan offers talks with Ukraine on weapons sanctions-busting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TAIPEI: Taiwan President Lai Ching-te on \u200bFriday offered talks with Ukraine to crack down on sanctions-busting after Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky name-checked the island as a source of illicit missile components.<\/p>\n<p>Since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, semiconductor powerhouse Taiwan has successively updated export controls to stop high-tech goods being used for military purposes, and has joined in wide-ranging Western-led sanctions against Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Davos on Thursday, Zelensky said Russia would not be able to produce missiles without \u201ccritical components sourced from China, Europe, the United States, and \u200cTaiwan,\u201d showed excerpts published \u200con the Ukraine president\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>Responding on his \u200cX \u2060account \u200bin English, \u200cLai said Taiwan has long worked with global partners to \u201cstaunchly support Ukraine through humanitarian aid &#038; coordinated sanctions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe welcome further exchanges of information with President @ZelenskyUa to further clamp down on illegal 3rd country transshipment &#038; concealed end-use,\u201d he said, posting a picture of orchids in the color of Ukraine\u2019s flag.<\/p>\n<p>Lai said \u201cthere have been young Taiwanese who have sacrificed their lives to defend freedom in Ukraine,\u201d referring to volunteer soldiers who have died \u2060fighting against Russia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe remain clear: any assistance to the aggressor or violations of int\u2019l embargoes &#038; export control \u200cregulations are unacceptable. We pray for peace to be \u200drestored to Ukraine soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters \u200din Taipei later on Friday, Lai said he welcomed Zelensky to pass \u200don any information to Taiwan about sanctions busting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are willing to strengthen controls on goods that are routed through third countries while concealing their final destination, to prevent them from entering Russia and to protect Ukraine,\u201d Lai added.<\/p>\n<p>Reuters could not reach the Ukraine presidential office \u200bfor comment outside of office hours.<\/p>\n<p>In November, Taiwan said it was revising export controls to comply with the Wassenaar Arrangement, an international agreement aimed \u2060at preventing weapons proliferation, though diplomatically isolated Taiwan is not a signatory.<\/p>\n<p>While senior Taiwan officials have spoken directly with some Ukrainian city mayors, there has been no publicly acknowledged direct contact between the two governments.<\/p>\n<p>Like most countries, Ukraine only has formal diplomatic relations with Beijing, not Taipei.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan and Ukraine do not have de facto embassies in each other\u2019s capitals, and Taiwanese humanitarian aid to Ukraine has mostly been coordinated by Taiwan\u2019s diplomatic offices in central and eastern Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan has compared the Russian invasion of Ukraine to China\u2019s military threat against an island it claims as its own.
