ZURICH: Switzerland must do more to shield children from social media risks, Interior Minister Elisabeth Baume-Schneider was quoted as \u200bsaying on Sunday, signalling she was open to a potential ban on the platforms for youngsters.<\/p>\n
Following Australia\u2019s recent ban on social media for under-16s, Baume-Schneider told SonntagsBlick newspaper that Switzerland should examine similar measures.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe debate in Australia and the \u200cEU is \u200cimportant. It must also \u200cbe \u2060conducted \u200bin Switzerland. \u200cI am open to a social media ban,\u201d said the minister, a member of the center-left Social Democrats. \u201cWe must better protect our children.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said authorities needed to look at what should be restricted, listing options \u2060such as banning social media use by children, \u200ccurbing harmful content, and addressing \u200dalgorithms that prey on \u200dyoung people\u2019s vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n
Detailed discussions will begin \u200din the new year, supported by a report on the issue, Baume-Schneider said, adding: \u201cWe mustn\u2019t forget social media platforms themselves: they must \u200btake responsibility for what children and young people consume.\u201d<\/p>\n
Australia\u2019s ban has won praise \u2060from many parents and groups advocating for the welfare of children, and drawn criticism from major technology companies and defenders of free speech.<\/p>\n
