GYEONGJU: President Donald Trump may be facing protests back home calling for \u201cno kings\u201d in the United States, but in South Korea officials had the perfect gift for the monarch-loving magnate \u2014 a replica golden crown.<\/p>\n
Trump met South Korean counterpart Lee Jae Myung on Wednesday, part of a visit in which he is expected to hold tense trade talks with China\u2019s Xi Jinping.<\/p>\n
And capping a lavish welcome ceremony in the historic South Korean capital of Gyeongju, Trump was presented with a replica of a crown worn by the kings of Silla, the dynasty that ruled from 57 BC to 935 AD.<\/p>\n
The gift from South Korea was a replica of \u201cthe largest and most extravagant of the existing gold crowns\u201d from the Silla period, Trump was told.<\/p>\n
It represented \u201cthe divine connection between heavenly and earthly leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n
Seoul\u2019s presidential office said the crown symbolizes \u201cpeace, coexistence, and shared prosperity on the peninsula \u2014 values that mirror the Silla dynasty\u2019s long era of stability.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump has made no secret of his love of monarchies the world over.<\/p>\n
Americans rallied across the country this month in opposition to what organizers call Trump\u2019s \u201cking-like\u201d presidency and erosion of democratic norms in the United States.<\/p>\n
Trump mocked the rallies on social media, sharing AI-generated posts showing himself wearing a crown while flying a fighter jet emblazoned with the words \u201cKing Trump\u201d dumping faeces on protesters.<\/p>\n
The US leader was also presented in South Korea with the Grand Order of Mugunghwa \u2014 the country\u2019s highest decoration.<\/p>\n
The medal had a laurel leaf design that symbolizes prosperity and it was given \u201cin anticipation of the peace and prosperity you will bring to the Korean peninsula,\u201d Trump was told.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a great honor,\u201d the US president said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019d like to wear it right now.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s love of gold is also well-known and he was gifted gold-plated golf balls during a visit to Tokyo this week.<\/p>\n
