China investigating 9 top-rank military officials for corruption
\nBEIJING
\nChina said on Friday it has launched corruption investigations into its number two general and eight other high-ranking military officials, marking the latest push under President Xi Jinping to root out graft.
\nHe Weidong, the Central Military Commission (CMC) vice chairman, was among nine individuals to be expelled from the army for having \u201cseriously violated\u201d discipline, according to an online statement by defence ministry spokesman Zhang Xiaogang.
\nWhile rumours swirled as He had not been seen in public since March, a formal investigation had not been previously announced.
\nAlso named was Miao Hua, the former head of the military\u2019s political work department who was formally removed from his post, according to state media reports in June.
\nEight of the individuals were expelled from China\u2019s ruling Communist Party, after previously serving on its elite Central Committee, Zhang said.
\n\u201cThe severe punishment of He Weidong, Miao Hua\u2026 and others once again demonstrates the Party Central Committee and the CMC\u2019s unwavering resolve to persevere in the fight against corruption,\u201d said Zhang.
\nXi has made rooting out alleged graft from all levels of government a top priority since coming to power just over a decade ago.
