NEW YORK: Chinese Premier Li Qiang told a group of American business executives Thursday that the US and his country need \u201cto work in the same direction\u201d to further what he called \u201cthe most important bilateral partnership in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
Li told the roughly 20 executives and others interested in US-China relations that their insights were valuable, and \u201cthe actions that you take are crucial.\u201d<\/p>\n
Journalists were escorted from the room after Li\u2019s brief opening remarks at the event, hosted by two nonprofit groups, the US-China Business Council and the National Committee on US-China Relations.<\/p>\n
The latter said the closed-door discussion touched on economic, investment and trade issues and the potential for greater cooperation around shared concerns.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is essential to American interests that business leaders and policy experts have the opportunity to discuss key issues, address concerns and maintain working relationships with Chinese leaders,\u201d committee president Stephen Orlins said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Li was in New York for the United Nations General Assembly\u2019s annual meeting of world leaders, where he\u2019s leading China\u2019s delegation on behalf of President Xi Jinping. Li is due to deliver his country\u2019s main speech to the assembly on Friday.<\/p>\n
The meeting comes at a delicate but dynamic time for relations between the world\u2019s two biggest economies. Trade, tariffs, TikTok\u2019s ownership, computer chips, minerals and more are in the mix of contentious points, not to mention a myriad of geopolitical, strategic and other issues.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe China-US relation is the most important bilateral partnership in the world,\u201d Li told Thursday\u2019s business gathering. \u201cIts steady development requires our two governments to work in the same direction.\u201d<\/p>\n
