WASHINGTON: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will address a major gathering next week of senior US military officers who will travel from around the globe to attend, President Donald Trump said Thursday.<\/p>\n
Trump confirmed to reporters in the Oval Office that the highly unusual meeting would take place, saying: \u201cI love it. I mean, I think it\u2019s great.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cLet him be friendly with the generals and admirals from all over the world,\u201d the president said.<\/p>\n
Vice President JD Vance also downplayed the significance of the meeting, telling reporters that it was \u201cactually not unusual at all,\u201d and saying \u201cit\u2019s odd that you guys have made it into such a big story.\u201d<\/p>\n
Neither official confirmed the purpose of the gathering of top military brass.<\/p>\n
The Pentagon likewise did not provide an explanation, with spokesman Sean Parnell only saying in a statement that Hegseth \u201cwill be addressing his senior military leaders early next week.\u201d<\/p>\n
In May, Hegseth ordered major cuts to the number of general and flag officers in the US military, but it was unclear if the meeting is related to that directive.<\/p>\n
