\nNeither the painkiller Tylenol nor vaccines have been shown to cause autism, the World Health Organization said on Tuesday, following comments from the US president and his administration to the contrary.
\nPresident Donald Trump insisted on Monday that pregnant women should \u201ctough it out\u201d and avoid Tylenol due to an unproven link to autism and also urged major changes to the standard vaccines administered to babies.
\nMedical groups have long cited acetaminophen, or paracetamol \u2014 the primary ingredient in Tylenol \u2014 as among the safest painkillers to take during pregnancy.
\nWHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic acknowledged that some observational studies \u2014 which are based purely on observations and do not include control or treatment groups \u2014 had \u201csuggested a possible association between prenatal exposure to acetaminophen or paracetamol and autism\u201d.
\nBut, he told reporters in Geneva, \u201cthe evidence remains inconsistent\u201d with other studies finding \u201cno such relationship\u201d.
\n\u201cIf the link between acetaminophen and autism were strong, it would likely have been consistently observed across multiple studies,\u201d he said, warning against \u201cdrawing casual conclusions about the role of acetaminophen in autism\u201d.
\nEuropean medical regulators meanwhile said their recommendations that pregnant women can use paracetamol for pain relief had not changed.
\n\u201cPatient safety is our top priority. There is no evidence that taking paracetamol during pregnancy causes autism in children,\u201d Alison Cave, safety chief at Britain\u2019s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), said in a statement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
