TOKYO: Japan\u2019s government has condemned Israel for its attack on Hamas officials in Qatar.<\/p>\n
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said on Wednesday that Tel Aviv\u2019s action undermines diplomatic peace efforts \u201cand threatens Qatar\u2019s sovereignty and security, and ultimately the stability of the region. Our country strongly condemns this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hayashi added that \u201cserious diplomatic efforts are being made\u201d to resolve the crisis.<\/p>\n
\u201cAchieving a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages are urgent issues,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe express our solidarity with Qatar and strongly urge Israel to return to negotiations immediately and sincerely work towards achieving a ceasefire and the release of hostages.\u201d<\/p>\n
Achieving peace and stability in the Middle East were important issues, he said, calling on all parties \u201cto refrain from any actions that undermine regional stability, including acts of terrorism.\u201d<\/p>\n
A local expert told Arab News Japan that some in the nation\u2019s defense circles believe that Israel\u2019s jets flew across Iraq and approached Qatar over the Arabian Gulf.<\/p>\n
Additionally, there is speculation among defense officials that the UK assisted Israel by providing jets for mid-air refueling.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf true, the British are complicit in this act of aggression and terrorism against a non-member NATO ally,\u201d one Japanese expert said asking not to be named.<\/p>\n
However, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, in a statement on X, has condemned Israel\u2019s attacks on Qatar.<\/p>\n
Starmer, who is expected to meet Israeli President Isaac Herzog in London on Wednesday, said he had no prior knowledge of the attack. White House officials have reportedly stated they were informed of the action.<\/p>\n
The UK prime minister said the military strike was a violation of Qatar\u2019s sovereignty and risked \u201cfurther escalation across the region.\u201d<\/p>\n
