{"id":84880,"date":"2025-08-05T13:01:59","date_gmt":"2025-08-05T08:01:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nabanews.pk\/en\/?p=84880"},"modified":"2025-08-05T13:01:59","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T08:01:59","slug":"ethiopians-told-to-avoid-irregular-routes-after-yemen-disaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nabanews.pk\/en\/ethiopians-told-to-avoid-irregular-routes-after-yemen-disaster\/","title":{"rendered":"Ethiopians told to \u2018avoid irregular routes\u2019 after Yemen disaster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ADDIS ABABA: Ethiopia on Tuesday asked citizens to \u201cavoid irregular routes,\u201d two days after a boat carrying mostly Ethiopian migrants sank off Yemen, killing at least 76 and leaving dozens missing.<\/p>\n<p>The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said 157 people were on board when the vessel sank on Sunday in the Gulf of Aden.<\/p>\n<p>It was headed for the Abyan governorate in southern Yemen, a popular destination for boats smuggling Africans hoping to reach wealthy Gulf states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthiopia mourns the tragic loss of 60+ (plus) citizens in a maritime disaster off Yemen\u2019s coast,\u201d Ethiopia\u2019s permanent mission in Geneva wrote on X adding that authorities in Addis Ababa are \u201cworking with partners to investigate and urges citizens to avoid irregular routes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of Africans travel from Djibouti to Yemen across the Red Sea, hoping to reach oil-rich Gulf states to work as laborers or domestic workers.<\/p>\n<p>Many are from Ethiopia\u2019s northern Tigray region, which was ravaged by war between 2020 and 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The Red Sea migrant route is one of the world\u2019s most dangerous, according to IOM, which documented at least 558 deaths last year.<\/p>\n<p>In March, at least 180 people were reported missing off the Yemeni coast, the vast majority of them Ethiopians.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ADDIS ABABA: Ethiopia on Tuesday asked citizens to \u201cavoid irregular routes,\u201d two days after a boat carrying mostly Ethiopian migrants sank off Yemen, killing at least 76 and leaving dozens missing.
