WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Thursday said national parks would hike entry fees for foreign tourists to \u201cimprove affordability\u201d for Americans, as he launched the country\u2019s year-long 250th birthday celebrations.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor this anniversary, I\u2019ve just signed an executive order to raise entrance fees for foreign tourists while keeping prices low for Americans,\u201d Trump told a cheering crowd at a rally in Iowa.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe national parks will be about America First,\u201d the Republican leader said, after issuing an executive order.<\/p>\n
In it, Trump also instructed the interior and state departments to \u201cencourage international tourism to America\u2019s national parks.\u201d<\/p>\n
The order outlined that revenue raised was to be used to improve the infrastructure and \u201cenhance enjoyment\u201d of the country\u2019s vast national park system.<\/p>\n
It is a rare move by the climate skeptic president to promote the environment and green spaces.<\/p>\n
In the executive order, Trump also revoked a 2017 directive by former president Barack Obama on \u201cpromoting diversity and inclusion in our national parks,\u201d in his latest attack on DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) initiatives.<\/p>\n
