MADRID: Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and European Commission Vice President Teresa Ribera on Friday urged the United States to reconsider new tariffs on goods from Europe and open a dialogue with Brussels to stop what Sanchez described as \u201cnonsense.\u201d
\nPresident Donald Trump said on Wednesday the United States will charge a 25 percent import tariff on all cars. On Thursday, the Commission said the European Union was preparing a \u201crobust, calibrated\u201d response.
\n\u201cToday, from here, I\u2019d like to make a call again to the US administration to reconsider and open dialogue with the European Commission and stop this nonsense,\u201d Sanchez told an economic event in Madrid.
\nSpeaking at the same event, Ribera \u2014 who served as energy minister under Sanchez and is now the bloc\u2019s antitrust chief \u2014 said the EU \u201cmisses the relationship of solidarity with the United States and we hope we can return to it,\u201d adding there was always space to talk and find solutions.
\nShe likened Trump\u2019s trade policy to the behavior of a \u201cschoolyard bully.\u201d
