Australian cricketing great Ricky Ponting has pinpointed key factors behind Pakistan\u2019s early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, highlighting tactical missteps and underutilisation of key players.<\/p>\n
Despite hosting the tournament and entering as defending champions, Pakistan became the first team eliminated after back-to-back defeats\u2014first against New Zealand in the opener, followed by a crushing loss to arch-rivals India on February 23 in Dubai.<\/p>\n
Speaking on The ICC Review, Ponting questioned whether Pakistan was maximising the potential of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, suggesting the team\u2019s strategy failed to capitalise on its biggest assets.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey haven\u2019t been able to give their best to the team. Those two guys had to step up and score big runs,\u201d Ponting said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd they haven\u2019t been able to do it in the first couple of games, which might be the reason why Pakistan didn\u2019t make it to the semi-finals,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
The former batting maestro also praised Indian star Virat Kohli for delivering in high-pressure matches.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve always said big games require big players. You need your stars to rise to the occasion, and there\u2019s no bigger game for India than one against Pakistan,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n
\u201cYour reputation is built on how you perform in the biggest contests on the international stage. So it\u2019s no surprise to me that Kohli stepped up,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n
For the unversed, Pakistan officially became the first team, alongside Bangladesh, to be eliminated from the ongoing tournament.<\/p>\n
The tournament will continue until March 9.<\/p>\n
