RIO DE JANEIRO: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday said he would not \u201cget into operational details\u201d after US President Joe Biden gave Ukraine permission to use Western-supplied long-range missiles against Russia.
\nSpeaking to broadcasters at the G20 in Brazil, Starmer refused to be drawn \u201cbecause the only winner, if we were to do that, is (Russian President Vladimir) Putin.\u201d
\nKyiv has long sought authorization from Washington to use the powerful Army Tactical Missile System, or ATACMS, to hit military installations inside Russia as its troops face growing pressure.
\nA US official said Washington\u2019s major policy shift on the missiles was in response to Russia\u2019s deployment of thousands of North Korean troops in its war effort.
\nBritain, which has provided Ukraine with Storm Shadow long-range missiles, has consistently pushed to ease restrictions on Kyiv\u2019s use of the weapons.
\nPutin had previously warned that letting Ukraine use long-range weapons would mean NATO was \u201cat war\u201d with Moscow.
\nIn parliament in London, lawmaker Roger Gale asked if Britain planned to \u201calign with the United States\u201d in granting Kyiv permission to use the UK-supplied missiles \u201cas it sees fit in its own defense.\u201d
\nJunior defense minister Maria Eagle said the government intended to \u201calign with our allies\u201d on how Ukraine \u201ccan make use of the capabilities that\u2019s been offered\u201d by its backers.
\nStarmer added: \u201cI\u2019ve been really clear for a long time now we need to double down.
\n\u201cWe need to make sure Ukraine has what is necessary for as long as necessary, because we cannot allow Putin to win this war,\u201d he said.
\nAsked if he had spoken to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the G20, he said: \u201cI haven\u2019t spoken to Russia and I\u2019ve got no plans to do so.\u201d
\nForeign Secretary David Lammy, speaking to reporters after a UN Security Council meeting in New York, also refused to discuss the use of British missiles, because it \u201crisks operational security.\u201d
\nAsked how concerned he was about the implications of Donald Trump\u2019s presidency on the war in Ukraine, he said: \u201cOne president at a time.\u201d
